Expecting God to help: A letter from George Mueller
When the China Inland Mission was crumbling under government pressure, Hudson Taylor received a letter from his hero in the faith, George Mueller. It is a powerful note of encouragement that could be addressed to leaders today.
Taylor didn’t just receive the letter itself. Mueller, though always in need himself, sent money, too. While caring for thousands of orphans in England, he appealed to God to provide for Taylor and all his missionaries braving warlike conditions in China. And God supplied exactly what was needed!
May the following excerpts bolster you, especially if you’re a leader in trying circumstances. Whatever you face, listen to the encouragement of this elder in the faith:
“I thought it might be a little encouragement to you in your difficulties, trials, hardships and disappointments to hear of one more who feels for you and who remembers you before the Lord…. On Him then reckon, to Him look, on Him depend; and be assured that if you walk with Him, look to Him and expect help from Him, He will never fail you. An older brother, who has known the Lord for forty-four years, who writes this, says for your encouragement that He has never failed him. In the greatest difficulties, in the heaviest trials, in the deepest poverty and necessities, He has never failed me; but because I was enabled by His grace to trust in Him, He has always appeared for my help.”
Do you expect God to help? I do. And then sometimes, I don’t. It’s in those silent, lonely times of waiting that you and I need to recall Mueller’s words: “He will never fail you.”
