Auditing your skills, passions, and insights

We are stewards of everything God has put into our hands, and one day we will have to give an account of how we handled the resources at our disposal.

We often consider this truth in relation to money, possessions, and time. But what about our skills? What about our innate passions? What about the insights God has given us into our field of work, walk with him, or life in general?

You are a steward of everything God has wired into you or revealed to you throughout your life.

I talk with many people who don’t know what God wants them to do. There are, of course, many ways to seek God’s will.

I’d recommend the study my dad wrote called Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God as a start!

But it may also be helpful to take an audit of what God has entrusted to you. God typically works in you before he works through you.

God may have granted you some experiences that have provided you with the wisdom you need for future assignments.

I spoke with an Uber driver on the way to the airport this morning. She reared two sons as a young single mom. Guess what she taught her two sons?

Not to have children out of wedlock or before they were ready to be stable, involved fathers. Her difficult experience motivated her to help her children make wise choices.

Other people have unique skills, such as in music, business, or website design. Too often, people take these skills for granted and never ask God why He gifted them the way He did. Could it be that God wants them to use their skills for His glory?

God might lead someone to donate some time to helping a nonprofit revamp its website and expand its reach. Maybe the Holy Spirit is prompting a businessperson to use His problem-solving ability to help His church address some chronic issues. Perhaps God wants an entrepreneur to use her unique perspective to help her church discern how to reach its community.

God does nothing by accident. If He gave you a particular skill or passion, seek to understand why. It would be a travesty to leave your God-given gifts on the shelf when God intends for you to use them to benefit others. Wise Christians leverage every gift, skill, insight, and passion they possess for the glory of God.
