When I feel down, this helps

I admit, joy doesn’t come naturally to me.

Take today, for instance. I’m tired. Down. Resisting the pull of my to-do list.

I’m starting to feel guilty that I’m not jumping into my usual productivity mode. This feeling just makes it all worse.

What do I do about this? First, I decided to write this devotion. I know getting stuff done prompts the brain to generate dopamine, which always lifts me out of a funk. So, I’ve learned to do small things that help me feel accomplished.

The other thing many years of ups and downs have taught me is that when it rains, it just means the sun is coming. If I go to bed feeling defeated, in the morning I’ll feel stronger.

If I can’t figure something out, I take it to the Lord and wait.

When I mourn, there is a Comforter.

Looking back over your own life, what has brought you out of your down times? Was it productivity, a walk in the sunshine, taking a nap, or reading Scripture? Was it talking to a friend? Praying?

This verse comes to my mind often these days:

Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.
—Psalm 30:5b

Praying this passage speaks to you in the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit.
